The definition of a garage is a building or shed for housing a motor vehicle or vehicles — so why is it that some garages aren’t used for that purpose at all? The problem with garages is that they are very convenient places to dump everything! Anything not needed in the house, bulky items too heavy to carry up to the attic or down to the basement. Before you know it, the car is sitting in the driveway because there’s no room for it anymore. Not everyone needs their garage for their vehicles so here are some alternate uses for your car port and reclaim your dump space!
The Man Cave
Garages tend to evoke masculine feelings so let’s keep it that way! All a man cave needs is some comfortable armchairs, maybe a couch, a home entertainment system, video games, a beer fridge, a table for snacks and treats.
You need a computer/gaming system, a large monitor with good speakers, a table or platform that will allow for easy viewing and a comfortable place to sit, preferably a captain’s chair. Plus storage space for game and equipment is a good idea.
You may need to ensure that there is enough ventilation and create strong wall and floor supports for some of the heavier equipment. Don’t overcrowd the gym, leave enough space for people to move around without getting in each other’s way. A cupboard for towels and odds and ends and a place to keep bottles of water are always useful.
For this to really zing, you’ll need a large wall mounted flat screen TV, a DVD / Blu-Ray player, a loud sound system, enough comfortable seating for everyone. Bedroom – lighting, proper flooring, paint the walls and ceiling, make a window for light and ventilation and have a closet or cupboard and a chest of drawers and furniture are needed.
A place to hang out or family room
Family members may want their own spot to chill, away from everything. Comfy couches, a TV and sound system and maybe a refrigerator for sodas and snacks. Sound proofing is also a good idea!
For those who are self-employed, a home office apart from the living area and the home atmosphere can help increase productivity. Workplace essentials like Internet, a desk and chair, a printer all with adequate lighting.
